What "wall-to-wall" really means
Unlike an area rug, which sits loose on the floor as a decorative island, a wall-to-wall (broadloom) carpet is cut from a wide roll and fitted permanently across the whole room, right up to the skirting on every side. There are no exposed floor edges, no rug to slip or curl, and the surface reads as one continuous, soft plane. That makes it a flooring decision rather than a furnishing one: it changes how a room sounds, how warm it feels underfoot, and how quiet it is. Broadloom is the workhorse choice for bedrooms, home theatres, staircases, study rooms, hotel corridors and guest rooms, and offices where acoustics and comfort matter more than showing off the floor beneath.
Cut pile vs loop pile
The single most important choice after material is the pile construction. Cut pile has the yarn tips sheared so the fibres stand upright; it feels soft, plush and luxurious underfoot, which is why it's the usual pick for bedrooms and formal sitting rooms. Its trade-off is that it can show footprints, vacuum marks and crushing over time. Loop pile leaves the yarn looped and uncut, giving a tighter, harder-wearing surface that resists matting and hides traffic well, which is why it suits stairs, hallways, offices and other high-use areas. Cut-and-loop combines both to create subtle sculpted patterns that also help disguise everyday wear. None of these is "better" in the abstract; the right one depends on the room's traffic and the look you want.
Underlay: the part you don't see but always feel
Good broadloom deserves good underlay (the cushioning layer laid between the subfloor and the carpet). It is not an optional extra. Underlay acts as a shock absorber that takes the daily impact off the carpet backing, so the carpet keeps its appearance longer; it also adds softness underfoot, improves thermal insulation, and damps sound. As a rule, firmer, denser underlay is the right call under loop pile and on stairs, while a slightly thicker, more cushioned pad makes cut-pile bedrooms feel more indulgent. Skimping here is a false economy because a premium carpet over a thin, low-density pad will flatten and tire far sooner than it should. Our fitters in Hyderabad recommend the underlay to match your specific carpet and room, within sensible limits.
Fitting and installation
The traditional and most common method is stretch-in installation: gripper (tack) strips are fixed around the room's perimeter, underlay is laid, and the carpet is then mechanically stretched taut and hooked onto the grippers. Done well, this gives a tight, smooth surface and lets the carpet move slightly with temperature and humidity without rippling, which matters in a climate like Hyderabad's. For some commercial and heavy-traffic settings we use glue-down (the carpet bonded directly to a very smooth subfloor) or double-stick (underlay glued down, then carpet glued to it) for maximum stability. Seams, doorway transitions and stair work are where fitting quality shows most, so this is genuinely a job for experienced installers. We start every project with a free measure so quantities, seam placement and roll direction are planned before anything is cut.
Materials and durability
We focus on pure wool and quality wool-rich broadloom. Wool is naturally resilient and springs back after compression, is naturally flame-resistant with a high ignition point, resists soiling thanks to its protective fibre structure, and ages gracefully. With sensible care, good wool broadloom can serve well for many years. Synthetic fibres such as nylon are also genuinely durable and are easier to clean with everyday products, which is why they dominate value and high-traffic commercial work. We'll talk you through the honest trade-offs rather than push one fibre for every room.
Care
Vacuum regularly to lift grit before it abrades the pile, deal with spills promptly by blotting (not rubbing), and use entrance mats to cut down on tracked-in soil. Wool benefits from specialist cleaning rather than harsh household chemicals, and periodic professional deep-cleaning keeps any broadloom looking its best. Rotate furniture slightly over time so cut pile doesn't crush in fixed spots.
An honest note
Wall-to-wall carpet is bought for comfort, warmth, quietness and a finished look, not as an asset that gains value. Choose the pile and material for how the room is lived in, pair it with proper underlay, and have it fitted properly. What's the difference between wall-to-wall carpet and an area rug?
Wall-to-wall (broadloom) carpet is fitted edge-to-edge to cover the entire floor and is fixed in place, with no exposed floor at the borders. An area rug is a loose, finished piece that sits on top of your existing floor as a decorative element and can be moved or taken with you. Wall-to-wall is a flooring decision; an area rug is a furnishing one.
Should I choose cut pile or loop pile?
It depends on the room. Cut pile is softer and more luxurious underfoot, so it's a favourite for bedrooms and formal rooms, but it can show footprints and crushing. Loop pile is tougher and hides traffic better, making it ideal for stairs, hallways and offices. Cut-and-loop sits in between and helps disguise wear with a subtle texture. We're happy to advise per room when we measure.
Do I really need underlay, and which type?
Yes. Underlay cushions the carpet from daily impact, so it keeps its look longer, and it also adds softness, warmth and sound insulation. As a general rule we use firmer, denser underlay under loop pile and on stairs, and a slightly more cushioned pad under cut-pile bedrooms. We recommend the right grade for your specific carpet rather than a one-size-fits-all pad.
How is wall-to-wall carpet installed?
The most common method is stretch-in: gripper strips are fixed around the room's edge, underlay is laid, and the carpet is stretched taut and hooked onto the grippers for a tight, smooth finish. For some commercial or heavy-traffic spaces we use glue-down or double-stick installation for extra stability. Our experienced fitters handle seams, doorways and stairs, which is where quality shows most.
Do you offer a free measure in Hyderabad?
Yes. We start every wall-to-wall project with a free measure so we can plan quantities, seam placement and roll direction before anything is cut. This avoids waste and ensures seams fall in the least visible, lowest-traffic positions. We measure across Hyderabad and the surrounding areas.
Is wool worth the extra cost for wall-to-wall, or is synthetic fine?
Both are valid. Wool is naturally resilient, flame-resistant, soil-resistant and ages beautifully, which is why it's the premium choice for bedrooms and refined spaces. Quality synthetics like nylon are also genuinely durable and easier to clean with everyday products, which is why they're popular for high-traffic and value-focused projects. We'll give you the honest trade-offs for your rooms rather than push one fibre everywhere.
How long will a wall-to-wall carpet last?
With proper underlay, correct fitting and sensible care, good wool and quality synthetic broadloom can serve well for many years. Lifespan depends far more on traffic, underlay quality, fitting and maintenance than on the carpet alone. A premium carpet laid over a thin, cheap pad will tire much faster, which is why we don't cut corners on underlay.
Which rooms suit wall-to-wall carpet best?
It excels where comfort, warmth and quiet matter most: bedrooms, home theatres, study rooms, staircases, and dressing areas in homes; and guest rooms, corridors, offices and hospitality spaces commercially. It's less suited to kitchens, bathrooms and other wet or high-spill zones, where a hard floor or washable rug makes more sense.
How do I clean and care for wall-to-wall carpet?
Vacuum regularly to remove grit before it wears the pile, blot spills promptly rather than rubbing, and use entrance mats to reduce tracked-in dirt. Wool prefers specialist cleaning over harsh household chemicals, and periodic professional deep-cleaning keeps any broadloom fresh. Shifting furniture occasionally helps cut pile avoid permanent crush marks.
Can wall-to-wall carpet be fitted over my existing tile or stone floor?
In most cases yes. Stretch-in fitting works over a sound, level subfloor using perimeter gripper strips and underlay, so your existing tile usually stays in place underneath. We assess the floor during the free measure and flag anything, such as significant unevenness, that should be addressed first for the best result.
Can I get a custom colour, width or specification?
Yes. We can source broadloom in a range of pile types, fibres and colours to suit a scheme, and we work with interior designers and architects on specification for residential and hospitality projects. Tell us the look, traffic level and budget and we'll match a carpet, underlay and fitting approach to it. Visit our Masab Tank showroom in Hyderabad to see and feel the options.
Do you deliver and fit outside Hyderabad?
Our expert fitting and free measure are focused on Hyderabad and the surrounding region, where our installers can deliver the seam and stair quality wall-to-wall demands. We also supply carpets and rugs pan-India and worldwide; for fitting beyond our local area, talk to us and we'll advise on the best approach for your location.
Does wall-to-wall carpet help with noise and warmth?
Yes. Because it covers the whole floor and sits over a cushioned underlay, broadloom absorbs sound and reduces echo, and it adds a layer of thermal insulation that makes a room feel warmer underfoot. This is a big part of why it's chosen for bedrooms, home theatres, staircases, offices and hotel rooms where comfort and quiet matter.
